Tesla Powershare home backup reaches new Model 3 and Model Y with Powerwall 3

Tesla Energy said Oct. 6 that new Model 3 and Model Y cars can now back up a home through Powerwall 3, adding over two days of power in an outage. Tesla's Powershare page ties it to U.S. and Puerto Rico orders placed on or after Oct. 1.

Why it matters: Tesla's two volume cars can now serve as home backup batteries, adding over two days of power in an outage when paired with Powerwall 3.

Tesla's two best-selling cars can now help keep a house running when the grid goes down. Tesla Energy posted on X on Oct. 6 that Powershare Home Backup "is now available for new Model 3 & Model Y with Powerwall 3" and can "extend your home backup by over 2 days with your vehicle." Until now, Cybertruck was the only Tesla that could back up a home. Its pairing with Powerwall 3 reached owners in September.

Tesla's updated Powershare page now lists Model 3 and Model Y next to Cybertruck for the Powerwall setup, with up to 11.52 kW of continuous power. The page says Powershare is "currently available for all Cybertruck vehicles, and all new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered on October 1, 2026 or later." A footnote limits that to orders in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and says "some, but not all" Model 3 and Model Y cars built before Oct. 1 also have it. The two-way power runs through an inverter Tesla calls PCS2 Lite. Owners can check the touchscreen under Software, then Additional Vehicle Info, for "Powershare Support: Enabled."

Electrek reports that owners who already have a Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector need no extra hardware, but they do need to contact Tesla support to turn the feature on. Electrek also notes that Standard trims are rated for up to two days of backup, and that Model S and Model X are not part of this launch. TeslaNorth called it the first time home backup has reached Tesla's two highest-volume vehicles.

Key facts

  • Eligible cars: new Model 3 and Model Y ordered in the U.S. or Puerto Rico on or after Oct. 1, 2026 (Tesla Powershare page).
  • Required setup: Powerwall 3 plus a Wall Connector or Universal Wall Connector. Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ support is listed as coming soon (Tesla Powershare page).
  • Backup time: over two days for Model 3 and Model Y and over three days for Cybertruck, based on a home using 30 kWh a day (Tesla Powershare page).
  • Not included yet: Grid Support and the no-Powerwall Gateway path stay Cybertruck-only (Electrek).
  • Launch post: Tesla Energy, Oct. 6, 2026 (X).

How to read it

This is home backup, not selling power to the grid. The car feeds the house through Powerwall 3 during an outage, and Tesla's day counts assume 30 kWh of daily use, so a bigger or smaller load changes the math. The Powerwall requirement matches what Elon said at Tesla's 2023 Investor Day, per Electrek: "I don't think very many people are going to want to use bidirectional charging, unless you have a Powerwall." Ford and GM already sell EVs that can back up a home using separate inverter hardware. Tesla's version runs through equipment many of its energy customers already have on the wall.
